In December 1992 a middle-aged office worker dropped out, moved to Florida, and reinvented himself. He became a scuba diving instructor and a boat captain. He moved over 30 times living and working in the Virgin Island, Ketchikan Alaska, Laughlin Nevada, Baltimore, Snowshoe West Virgina, Lake Powell Arizona, and the Florida Keys.
 
Captain Dennis wished to escape to an island with no bridges. But he wanted to maintain friendships. He began to write letters to friends. The list of friends became 60+ and the letters began to be photocopied. And in December 1999, Dennis self-published edited letters.
Dennis finds a diverse America. All his islands come with bridges of friendships.
