Twitch will remove both the host and host mode features on Oct. 3

In a recent update, livestreaming platform Twitch has announced its intention to remove both the host and host mode features on Oct. 3, 2022, as first reported by Zach Bussey.

After the removal of host mode on that date, streamers’ list of channels they used to automatically host will be changed to “Suggested Channels” in the dashboard.

They added an explanation as to why they’re removing the feature as well.

“We made the decision to deprecate this feature because the experience it delivers to viewers doesn’t match their expectations when they come to Twitch,” it reads.

Host mode was introduced back in 2014 and allowed Twitch streamers to host fellow content creators' broadcasts when they themselves were not live by embedding a link on their channel. It was an effective way for viewers to discover new streamers that may have something in common with the ones the people they usually watch.

After almost eight years as apart of Twitch’s service, the hosting feature is set to be discontinued starting on Oct. 3, 2022. On user’s Stream Manager quick action page the ‘Host Channel’ action will be removed and ‘Autohost’ will be replaced by ‘Suggested Channels’ in Twitch’s channel settings.

Other streamers on the platform, like iMoparHD, have mentioned that he doesn’t know anyone that actually watches people when they’re just being hosted, and claimed that it would be a bigger deal if Twitch removed raids.

Twitch elaborated in its statement that hosting prevented viewers from interacting with the chosen streamer and that it inhibited meaningful connection to new viewers. Unlike raiding, hosting counted toward the host’s viewership and provided an entirely separate viewer experience, which likely contributed toward the distance to which Twitch referred.
